Cure for HIV?

For anyone that is interested I am dedicating this blog to any and all recent news about HIV in the medical field.

For those who I have not heard,  a child in Mississippi is said to have been cured from having HIV. She was born with HIV, however after being treated with an aggressive amount of antiretrovirals 30 hours after being born she is "functionally cured" from HIV.

Here is the NY Times article about the unusual case. Time will tell if this cure can be generalized to the entire population. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/04/health/for-first-time-baby-cured-of-hiv-doctors-say.html?pagewanted=all

This article brings ominous news for South Africa involving the nonavailability of rape kits.

A very interesting study about how gender norms can affect the answers that boys and girls may provide in studies regarding their sexual behavior and attitudes.
(If you are interested in the full article, please email me at matth@grassrootsoccer.org and I can forward it to you) http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12806529

This study has had an impact on how Grassroot Soccer is adapting their curriculum to the needs of the children we reach. We are beginning to implement "single-sex" practices and have found that it has fostered greater conversation in the group. Both girls and boys feel more open talking about their attitudes and behaviors over certain issues with others of the same gender rather than in a larger group with everyone.

I hope this has been informative, if you have any questions or the links are not working just send me a message!
